Public Speaking And Its Value

In a world where everything is propagated by word of mouth, being able to speak is considered very important. Man has dominated almost everything, to a certain extent, even the nature; but what he has not been able to dominate is himself. Fear is something which can break even the strongest and the smartest of men and of all the fears, the fear of public speaking takes the top spot. Yes, according to the stats, people are more scared of speaking in public than dying!

While public speaking cannot kill an individual, it sure can bring him to a level growing up from which can be very difficult. It is a huge embarrassment for someone if he goes on stage and is not able to deliver. Being made fun of in front of a thousand people can be very harsh, a level which isn't hard to imagine for a lot of us. Most people who are not confident of going on stage face the following while on stage:

a) Shaking knees

b) Quivering voice

c) Drying mouth

Be assured that all these traits are very common and might happen to even the best of speakers at any given point of time. Also, this is not reason enough to quit and swear never to go on stage again. If this thought comes to mind, ask yourself a question - Exactly how important is public speaking today? You will find yourself going onto the stage automatically.

It is necessary to realize the fact that learning the art of public speaking is more important than anything else i.e. everything else takes a secondary position when compared to it. Gone are the days when only the top executives were required to make presentations. In today's world, the juniors are given equal opportunity and it is public speaking that differentiates them from the rest. If you want to make it big in your workplace, public speaking is the key.

Dynamic speaking is an ability that is portrayed by few. It helps people lead the discussion to an area of their choice. It can make a huge difference especially in the corporate world where millions of dollars are spent on educating the employees how to convince clients. From doctors to engineers, from agents to businessmen, everyone needs to have these skills in order to succeed.

Another advantage of public speaking that can be prominently seen is when an individual tries to make a network. It allows them to meet new people and know them better. How does that happen? The answer is simple; when someone makes a public appearance, he is automatically getting introduced to everyone in the audience without having to meet everyone individually. In order to impress the audience, some things that one should never forget to do is:

a) Maintain eye contact.

b) Do the homework and have sufficient knowledge about the topic so that any queries can be answered.

c) Keep the attention of the audience by interacting with them at regular intervals.

Remember that public speaking is only effective as long as the audience is listening attentively. If this is not achieved, the effort goes in vain.
